Mala Htun, a Distinguished Professor of Political Science at The University of New Mexico, passed away at the age of 55 after battling cancer. She was known for her work on women’s rights and social inequalities, as well as her efforts to promote inclusive organizational climates in STEM fields. Services for Htun will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Congregation Albert in Albuquerque.
Htun, who received her Ph.D. from Harvard, authored three books and received numerous awards for her research. She was a respected scholar and leader in her field, serving as vice president of the American Political Science Association and holding several prestigious fellowships and appointments. Htun was also recognized as a Distinguished Professor at UNM in 2024, the highest honor given to faculty.
Colleagues and friends remember Htun as an outstanding scientist, educator, and advocate for women’s rights. She is survived by her husband, three children, and parents. The UNM Foundation will establish an academic endowment in her honor.
Htun’s contributions to the field of political science and her dedication to fostering a supportive and empowering environment for students, staff, and faculty will be dearly missed. The academic community mourns the loss of a remarkable scholar and leader.
