Deb Haaland, the former Interior secretary known for her conservation and clean energy efforts, has announced her Democratic campaign for governor of New Mexico. If successful, she could become the first Native American woman to serve as governor in any state. With Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham terming out of office in 2026, Haaland joins the race with Scott Forrester as her campaign manager. The state’s primary focus on oil production could pose a challenge for her as she has been vocal about opposing unfettered oil and gas development and supporting the Green New Deal.
Despite the political landscape favoring Democrats in New Mexico, the upcoming election could be competitive. Republican Mark Ronchetti, who lost to Lujan Grishma in 2022, proposed individual rebates from the state’s oil and natural gas income to improve early literacy among families. Concerns about crime and homelessness are also at the forefront of current legislative agenda. Haaland’s campaign will likely focus on her progressive policies and track record in environmental conservation.
