29 people die in Los Angeles-area wildfires

The number of deaths in the wildfires in the Los Angeles area this month has risen to 29, with the most recent death occurring in the Palisades Fire which destroyed thousands of homes in Pacific Palisades and on the Pacific Coast. The Palisades Fire burned 23,448 acres and destroyed 6,837 homes. Damage assessment teams are nearly finished with their inspections, and the fire is 95% contained. Residents were allowed to return to certain areas that had been under mandatory evacuation orders. Another destructive wildfire, the Eaton Fire, also broke out on Jan. 7, causing major damage in Altadena and burning homes in Pasadena and Sierra Madre. It has destroyed 9,418 homes and burned 14,021 acres, with the fire being 98% contained on Monday. The fires occurred during hurricane-force Santa Ana winds that fueled the flames and grounded firefighting aircraft. The causes of both fires are under investigation. Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley has called the fires one of the most destructive disasters in Los Angeles history.
