New Mexico’s Aging and Long-Term Services Department Secretary-Designate, Emily Kaltenbach, recently discussed the growing number of older adults in the state’s rural communities and the need for better support systems. Kaltenbach, appointed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, emphasized the importance of focusing on caregivers and ensuring they receive proper training and support.
Kaltenbach also highlighted the New MexiCare program, which provides assistance to individuals who do not qualify for Medicaid but require caregiving services. She discussed the department’s budget request and plans to support bills related to supporting decision-making and guardianship for older adults and individuals with disabilities.
Drawing on her previous experience at the Drug Policy Alliance, Kaltenbach emphasized the importance of person-centered care and community input in policy decisions. She stressed the need to listen to the communities being served and ensure that policies are developed with their voices in mind. Kaltenbach’s personal connection to rural communities and her dedication to supporting older adults make her well-suited to lead the department.
