Interior Department Officially Renames Gulf of Mexico as ‘Gulf of America’

The Trump administration has fulfilled President Trump’s promises to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” and return Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, to its original name. Changing the name of the Gulf within the United States is within the administration’s power, with Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida already using the new name in official communications.

Other countries do not have to follow suit, as seen when President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico suggested renaming America as América Mexicana in response. The Interior Department stressed the importance of the Gulf of America in the nation’s history and economy.

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names is working to fulfill Trump’s order to restore the peak’s name to Mount McKinley, after the Obama administration officially named it Denali. Alaskan senators have objected to the renaming efforts, believing Denali to be the rightful name for the mountain.

Proposals for name changes are subject to approval by the geographic names board, and if a decision is not reached in a reasonable amount of time, the interior secretary has the authority to change a name. In the case of Denali, Alaska advocated for years before the Obama administration officially renamed the mountain.
