Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko poised to secure 7th term in disputed election, opposition cries foul

President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus is expected to win another term after an orchestrated election, despite opposition claims that it is a sham. Lukashenko, in power for three decades, cracked down on dissent and free speech in response to protests following the last election in 2020. He is known as “Europe’s Last Dictator” and relies on Russia for support. His four challengers on the ballot are loyal to him, and the opposition leader-in-exile has called the election a farce. The European Union has rejected the election as illegitimate. Lukashenko is also facing accusations of violating media freedom and targeting journalists. Voter turnout stood at 81.85%, but independent monitoring is lacking. Concerns about vote-rigging have been raised, with reports of internet issues and access to VPN services being blocked. Lukashenko’s support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine has strained ties with the West. Despite this, there may be a desire to reengage with the West, as demonstrated by the release of a U.S. citizen from detention. Lukashenko has not ruled out running for office again in 2030, showing his intention to remain in power.
