Zia Natural Gas Energy Efficiency and Bernalillo Solar Hearings Cancelled

This week, hearings on Zia Natural Gas’ energy efficiency plan and a proposed 400-megawatt solar array in New Mexico were canceled due to lack of opposition. The solar project, which could be the largest in the state, requires approval from the Public Regulation Commission (PRC), unlike smaller projects like Diamond Tail and Rancho Viejo. Zia Natural Gas, serving over 35,000 customers, filed their fourth energy efficiency plan as required by the Efficient Use of Energy Act. This plan, which focuses on various energy efficiency measures, will not impact customer rates. Meanwhile, the Bernalillo Solar project, a 400-megawatt solar array with battery storage, planned for Bernalillo County, was also canceled due to lack of opposition. The project, which would require transmission lines to connect to PNM’s substation, is part of Orion Power Generation, experienced in developing large arrays. Orion has previously worked on projects in New Mexico, including the Clines Corner Wind Project completed in 2021. The cancellation of these hearings highlights ongoing efforts in New Mexico to reduce carbon emissions and expand renewable energy sources.
