Man admits to murdering New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare

A fugitive who shot, kidnapped, and killed New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare has pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges. Jaremy Smith will spend the rest of his life in prison after admitting to carjacking resulting in death, using and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence, kidnapping resulting in death, possessing a stolen firearm, and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Hare was shot and left on the side of the road by Smith after offering him help with a flat tire. Smith then continued to drive Hare’s car before crashing it and fleeing. Smith was later found by authorities in Albuquerque. Hare’s family expressed relief that Smith owned up to his actions but believe there is still a long road to justice. Smith waived his right to plead not guilty in the future and may have to pay restitution to Hare’s family. The death penalty is also being considered in connection to another murder case in South Carolina, but no charges have been filed yet.
