Efforts to combat fentanyl in New Mexico are showing progress, but ongoing work is necessary

In an effort to combat the rising crisis of fentanyl overdoses in New Mexico, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has praised the success of campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of the drug. Carlos Briano, from the DEA’s El Paso Division, credited organizations like ‘One Pill Can Kill’ and ‘Keep New Mexico Alive’ for helping to reduce the demand for fentanyl in the state.

According to the New Mexico Department of Health, drug overdose deaths have decreased by 8% since 2021, which Briano attributes to prevention efforts and the DEA’s work to disrupt drug cartels’ manufacturing of fentanyl. The agency has been working with governments to restrict the use of precursor chemicals used in making the illicit drug.

Briano reported that the percentage of fentanyl pills containing lethal doses has decreased from 70% to 50% in the past year. While progress has been made, he emphasized the importance of continuing these efforts to further decrease the availability and use of fentanyl in New Mexico.
