Rep. Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress, remained focused on her work despite a policy barring her from women’s restrooms in the House. Speaker Mike Johnson initiated the policy in response to McBride’s election, but McBride chose to respect it and focus on serving her constituents. Some criticized her for not protesting the policy more vigorously, but McBride believed refusing to engage in a fight was a form of civil disobedience.
Despite the policy and Republican efforts to restrict trans rights, McBride found warmth and welcome from colleagues of both parties. She prioritized passing bipartisan legislation with the Ending Scam Credit Repair Act as her first bill. McBride was determined to deliver for her constituents and build relationships with serious members of Congress across party lines.
Reflecting on the history and responsibility of her role, McBride acknowledged the gravity of being in a chamber that passed significant legislation like the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. She also shared her habit of ordering a large meal from a Taco Bell-KFC combo restaurant after late votes in Washington, D.C., although she clarified that it wasn’t a nightly occurrence. McBride emphasized the need to fully and equally include LGBTQ individuals in public life, showcasing that they can be capable legislators.
