A new bill pre-filed in the New Mexico Senate aims to limit the use of cellphones in public and charter schools across the state. Sponsored by Republican Senator Crystal Brantley, the bill, known as the “anti-distraction policy,” would require school districts to adopt guidelines restricting cellphone use. The bill also includes a provision to reimburse districts for any costs associated with purchasing specialized storage equipment to implement these policies. Brantley cited concerns about the negative impact of unfettered internet and social media access on students, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and cyberbullying. She pointed to Los Angeles Public Schools’ use of Yondr Pouches to keep students’ phones locked during the school day as an example. The bill does not specify the exact policies that would be implemented but may change as it progresses through the legislative session. Some parents have expressed concerns about the lack of language addressing safety in schools and the need for cellphones in case of emergencies.
