Understanding the Israel-Hamas ceasefire and its implications for Gaza

The ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas has been reached after 15 months of devastating war that resulted in tens of thousands of deaths in Gaza. The truce aims to halt the Israeli bombardment of Gaza, release hostages from both sides, and provide much-needed aid to the enclave. The agreement consists of a three-phase plan, with the initial ceasefire phase set to start in about six weeks pending approval from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet and full cabinet. The ceasefire could potentially go into effect as early as Friday, but may be delayed due to complications, including accusations of Hamas reneging on parts of the agreement. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri denied these claims, stating that there was no basis to suggest that they had backed down from the terms of the ceasefire agreement. The truce is anticipated to bring relief to the war-torn region and mark a significant change in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
