New Mexico flamenco classes intended to motivate young students

The Mesa Verde Community Center in Albuquerque is offering a free flamenco class as part of the National Institute of Flamenco’s outreach program. The instructor, Huitzil Bennett Perez, is teaching kids and adults alike the traditional Spanish dance form. The program has been in session since August and has expanded to other cities like Taos and Hobbs, with a recent in-school residency in Los Lunas sponsored by Meta.

The program has seen a growth in participation over the last year, with students initially unsure about flamenco but eventually becoming enthusiastic about learning the intricate steps and movements. The National Institute of Flamenco hopes to expand the program to include senior citizens as well.

The initiative aims to bring flamenco arts to various demographics and communities, introducing them to a new form of dance and cultural expression. For more information on the program, visit the National Institute of Flamenco’s website.
