Legislation for Paid Family Medical Leave Reintroduced to the Legislature

State Rep. Christine Chandler, D-Los Alamos, has pre-filed the Paid Family and Medical Leave bill in New Mexico for the fifth time. This bill aims to provide paid time off to workers for major medical needs, including parental leave, care for a loved one, and recovery from domestic violence or sexual assault. Despite previous failed attempts to pass the bill, some recent changes to Medicaid reimbursement rates have increased the likelihood of its passage this year.

If enacted, the bill would require employers with five or more employees to contribute 0.4% into a fund managed by the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions. Employees would also contribute 0.5% per paycheck into the same fund. The bill proponents argue that the fund will pay for itself within a few years of operation and will be able to refund the state’s general fund within six years.

Advocates believe that this bill can make a significant difference in the lives of workers, potentially even saving lives. Supporters argue that it will help small businesses compete with larger corporations by offering paid family and medical leave benefits to employees. The bill has faced opposition from Republicans in the past, who argue that it will hurt small businesses in the state. However, proponents remain optimistic about its passage this year, citing confidence in the bill’s financial solvency and the benefits it can provide to workers in New Mexico.
