Bühler purchases Cerex’s puffing technology for use in pet food and feed applications

Bühler, a leading provider of solutions for food and feed production, has expanded its capabilities by acquiring puffing technology from Swiss manufacturer CEREX. The innovative technology, which uses heat and pressure to expand raw materials, is a game-changer in cereal and snack production. Christoph Vogel, Head of Business Unit Human Nutrition at Bühler, highlighted the broad range of recipe possibilities this technology offers, allowing for continued innovation in recipe development.

Puffed products are increasingly popular for their light texture and enhanced digestibility, meeting the demand for healthier and more sustainable snacks. In addition to these consumer benefits, the technology offers production advantages such as reducing sugar content, boosting nutritional value, and improving shelf life. Bühler’s Cerex puffing technology is highly efficient, achieving over 95% yield while using 50% less energy compared to similar systems, thus supporting sustainability goals and reducing waste.

To further support their customers, Bühler plans to open an Application & Training Center in April 2025 at their headquarters in Uzwil, Switzerland. This center will allow customers to experiment with new recipes and processes using the puffing technology, facilitating collaboration and innovation in the industry. With this acquisition, Bühler demonstrates its commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its customers and driving progress in food and feed production.
