The 2028 Olympics in the shadow of Los Angeles wildfires

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris concluded with a handover to Los Angeles, the host city for 2028. However, the city is currently facing devastating wildfires that have destroyed homes and businesses, particularly in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena. While the fires have not damaged any major Olympic venues yet, they have cast a shadow over the upcoming Games.

Despite the challenges, officials like Casey Wasserman, the chairman of LA28, remain confident that Los Angeles will be ready to host the Olympics in 2028. Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed a “Marshall Plan” to help rebuild the affected areas, with the hope of the incoming administration providing support.

The 2028 Games will be spread throughout Southern California, with events planned as far as Temecula and Oklahoma City. However, organizers may face competition for construction resources as they work to rebuild the city after the fires.

Historically, only a few natural disasters have impacted the Olympics, such as Rome losing the 1908 Games due to an eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Despite the challenges, experts believe that the IOC is unlikely to move the Games away from Los Angeles unless faced with another major catastrophe. IOC President Thomas Bach has expressed solidarity with the people of Los Angeles and support for those affected by the fires.
