Suicide rates decline in certain populations in New Mexico | Local News

New Mexico Department of Health reports a significant decrease in suicide deaths among women and Indigenous peoples in 2023 compared to 2022. The number of women who died by suicide in New Mexico decreased by 42%, while the number of Native American/Alaska Native residents who died by suicide decreased by 43%. Overall, the state’s suicide death rate decreased by 9% in 2023. While these numbers are a positive sign, the NMDOH emphasizes that more efforts are needed to sustain this trend. Nationwide, males have a higher suicide rate compared to females, with males accounting for nearly 80% of suicides. Risk factors for suicide include substance use disorders, mental illness, trauma history, and family history of suicide, while protective factors include access to healthcare, connections to community, and suicide prevention training. Anyone struggling is encouraged to call or text New Mexico’s 988 Lifeline for free and confidential support. Additional resources are available through the New Mexico Suicide Prevention Coalition. More information can be found on NMDOH’s Injury Prevention website.
