The Mountain West Conference is making a name for itself as one of the toughest men’s basketball leagues in the country, with five teams in the top 65 of the NET Rankings. Leading the charge are Utah State and New Mexico, two of the hottest teams in the nation.
Utah State boasts the best win percentage in the country at .941, with a 16-1 overall record and a 7-1 record in Quad 1 and Quad 2 games. Led by head coach Jerrod Calhoun, the Aggies have started the season strong despite losing talent in the offseason. They are also unbeaten in road/neutral site games and look to continue their success against UNLV.
New Mexico has also been on a tear, winning six straight conference games for the first time since joining the MW. Donovan Dent has been a key player for the Lobos, ranking in the Top 10 nationally in assists and leading the team to victories over tough opponents like San Diego State.
Other notable performances in the Mountain West include San Diego State’s Magoon Gwath, who is a dominant rim protector, and Colorado State’s Nique Clifford, who is a force on the boards.
Donovan Dent of New Mexico was named Player of the Week for his impressive performances, while Wyoming’s Abou Magassa was named Top Freshman for his standout game against New Mexico. The Mountain West continues to be a conference to watch as the competition heats up.
