Santa Fe Begins Removing Enclosure Around Soldiers’ Monument

The City of Santa Fe is making moves to restore the controversial soldiers’ monument in the plaza after a court order from Judge Matthew Wilson. The monument, also known as the obelisk, was torn down by protesters on Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2020 due to a quote honoring “heroes who have fallen in the various battles with savage Indians.” The city placed a box around the remains as debates raged on about what to do next. However, a Hispanic heritage organization brought a case against the city, alleging violations of state laws in modifying the monument without proper approval.

Following the court order, the city is now removing the box around the monument and documenting the damage before starting the restoration process. The organization argued that the monument’s historical significance warranted protection under the law. The ruling also highlighted that similar protections did not apply to other monuments like the Diego de Vargas statue and the Kit Carson Obelisk. The city must complete restoration by June 18 to comply with preservation laws.
