A team of 25 personnel from fire agencies across New Mexico has been deployed to California to help fight wildfires fueled by high winds. Led by Nathan Miller, Wildland Superintendent for the City of Santa Fe, the team is working on-and-off 24-hour shifts to protect neighborhoods and conduct cold-mopping to eliminate hotspots near the fire line.
Miller emphasized the increasing prevalence of wind-driven fires like the ones in California, comparing them to wildfires in New Mexico. Despite the tragic circumstances, New Mexico crews have found comfort in seeing familiar faces who helped during past fires in their own state.
The community in Los Angeles has shown their appreciation for the New Mexico crews, with people expressing gratitude and respect for the work being done. The crews are scheduled to return on January 26, having made a positive impact in aiding firefighting efforts in California.
