The use of Rapid DNA technology in New Mexico may help clear backlogs and solve additional crimes.

A new tool called Rapid DNA is being praised by law enforcement officials and victims’ rights advocates in New Mexico as a potential game-changer in solving crimes. Rapid DNA can provide DNA analysis in just 90 minutes, compared to waiting months or even years for results, allowing for quicker resolution of cases and holding criminals accountable. Linda Atkinson, the executive director of the New Mexico Victim’s Rights Project, has highlighted the importance of this technology in bringing the state into the 21st century and preventing perpetrators from committing more crimes while investigations drag on. During a webinar, law enforcement officials discussed the benefits of rapid DNA testing and advocated for its passage. Despite previous advocacy efforts from state leaders like police chief Steve Hebbe and Attorney General Raul Torrez, lawmakers have not yet passed any crime-related bills to implement this technology. Atkinson emphasized the need for political will to push for the passage of rapid DNA testing as a critical tool in fighting crime.
