New Mexico’s suicide rates for women and Indigenous people saw a significant drop in 2023, according to a report from the state health department. There was a 42% decline in the number of women who died by suicide, from 116 in 2022 to 67 in 2023, and a 43% decrease in the Indigenous People demographic, with both males and females seeing a decline in suicide rates.
While the male suicide rate remained unchanged, the overall suicide rate in the state decreased by 9% in 2023. Dr. Miranda Durham, NMDOH chief medical officer, emphasized the importance of preventing suicide by recognizing warning signs and promoting prevention efforts.
Despite the positive decrease in suicide rates, the department noted that there is still work to be done as the state’s suicide death rate is still higher than it was a decade ago. For those in need of help, New Mexico offers a 24/7 free and confidential Lifeline for emotional, mental health, and substance use support. Resources can also be found online through the New Mexico Suicide Prevention Coalition and the state health department.
