Lawsuits allege that Southern California Edison did not take necessary steps to prevent Eaton Fire

Two lawsuits were filed against Southern California Edison on Monday, alleging that the utility failed to de-energize its power equipment and clear brush, leading to the Eaton Fire near Pasadena. The blaze, one of several burning in the Los Angeles area, destroyed over 7,000 structures and remained one-third contained as investigators worked to determine the cause.

Southern California Edison has denied any involvement in the fire’s ignition, stating that fire officials have not implicated its electric facilities. However, the lawsuits suggest there is evidence pointing to the utility’s inaction. In response, Southern California Edison expressed condolences for those affected by the fires and stated that it is cooperating with investigations.

The lawsuits, filed on behalf of individuals and entities impacted by the fire, argue that the utility should have taken preventative measures given the forecasted high winds. They allege that Southern California Edison’s equipment may have sparked the fire in Eaton Canyon, with data suggesting numerous electrical faults in the area before the fire’s start.

The legal action also notes that the utility’s electrical equipment was linked to previous devastating fires in the region. Southern California Edison maintains that it followed safety protocols, including shutting off distribution lines near Eaton Canyon before the fire started.

Financial analysts estimate that the wildfires in Los Angeles County could result in insured losses of about $30 billion, primarily affecting homeowners. The lawsuits seek to hold Southern California Edison accountable for the alleged negligence and seek justice for the victims who lost their homes and possessions.
