Below-normal snowpacks observed in New Mexico

New Mexico’s Snowpacks Remain Below Average Despite Recent Snowfall

Despite a recent dusting of snow across the state, New Mexico’s snowpacks remain smaller than average for this time of year. According to hydrologist Andrew Mangham, this small amount of snow is not enough to save the state in terms of water supply. The hotter temperatures, attributed to human extraction and the burning of fossil fuels, pose a threat to New Mexico’s water systems.

Climate studies have shown that New Mexico’s snowpacks have shrunk in recent decades, leading to increased water needs for ecosystems and crops, as well as more intense fires. Smaller rivers in the state face a higher risk of insufficient water compared to larger rivers, as robust snowpacks in Colorado help replenish them.

While there is still a lot of the season left, the dry spell raises concerns for desert tributaries in the spring. Experts warn that the warmer and less snowy conditions predicted for the state could have serious consequences for New Mexico’s water supply.
