Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces received the 5th spot on the Lown Institute’s 8th annual Shkreli Award for allegations of refusing cancer treatment to patients and demanding payments upfront, even from those with insurance. Former patients spoke out about being turned away for care, prompting an investigation by the New Mexico Attorney General. The hospital’s lease from the city of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County requires it to provide care to indigent patients. The city announced that the hospital breached its contract due to the reported lack of care. The hospital, owned by Lifepoint Health, which is owned by Apollo Global Management, has not commented on the allegations. Martin Shkreli, after being charged and convicted of securities fraud, was banned from the pharmaceutical industry, with his former firm raising drug prices by 5,000%. The Lown Institute gives the Shkreli Award to highlight examples of profiteering and dysfunction in healthcare.
