Jimmy Carter, former President, receives state funeral at Washington cathedral

President Jimmy Carter will be honored in a state funeral on Thursday, following days of ceremonies celebrating his contributions as an influential world leader. His casket was laid in state at the Capitol rotunda, and will be moved to the National Cathedral for the funeral where President Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy. Tributes from former President Gerald Ford and former Vice President Walter Mondale will also be given by their sons. Vice President Kamala Harris, members of Congress, former presidents, Supreme Court justices, and members of Carter’s administration will be in attendance. Following the funeral, Carter will be buried on the grounds of his home in Plains, Georgia after a private family funeral. Harris praised Carter for his humility, modesty, and grace, noting that he lived his faith and served the people, leaving the world in a better place. Senate Majority Leader John Thune highlighted Carter’s spirit of volunteerism, particularly his work with Habitat for Humanity. Thune recalled Carter’s commitment to building homes, including a project in South Dakota in 1994. Carter’s legacy as a compassionate leader dedicated to making a positive impact on the world was celebrated throughout the week of ceremonies honoring his life and work.
