According to the New Mexico Health Department, overdose deaths in the state have declined by 8% since 2021. In Santa Fe, mortality data shows a decrease in drug overdose deaths for the second consecutive year, with the number dropping from 997 in 2022 to 948 in 2023. Fentanyl was involved in 65% of overdose deaths in 2023, while methamphetamine was involved in 51% of cases. The majority of overdose deaths (84%) occurred among New Mexicans aged 25-64, with 26% of deaths in the 35 to 44 age group. While these declines are positive, NMDOH Interim Secretary Gina DeBlassie emphasized that more needs to be done to address substance misuse in the state.
The report also highlights the multifaceted nature of substance misuse as a complex public health issue. Efforts to aggressively combat this problem will be ongoing. The data underscores the importance of continued vigilance and targeted interventions to prevent further drug-related deaths in New Mexico.
