N.Y. Appellate Judge Greenlights Trump’s Hush Money Sentencing for Friday

A New York appeals court judge denied Donald Trump’s request for an emergency order to halt President-elect’s sentencing in a criminal case related to hush money payments. Trump’s attorney argued for presidential immunity, but the judge rejected the claim. The judge found that Trump does not have immunity until he is sworn in as president, and scheduled his sentencing for Friday. Prosecutors argued that delaying the sentencing further is unnecessary as he is not yet engaged in official presidential functions. Trump was convicted in May for falsifying records related to hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels in 2016. The judge plans to give him an unconditional discharge, meaning the conviction will stand but no punishment will be imposed. The DA’s office contended that Trump’s claim of presidential immunity is baseless and that he should go through the legal process. The judge’s ruling denied Trump’s request for a stay, allowing the sentencing to proceed as scheduled. The DA’s office also stated that now is the least burdensome time for Trump to be sentenced. Trump’s attempts to stop the legal proceedings were unsuccessful, and the sentencing is set to take place without further delay.
