Eddie Nunez Named New Athletic Director for Houston – Deseret News

Former BYU and Virginia head football coach Bronco Mendenhall is set to return to the college football sideline with the New Mexico Lobos, but he has lost his boss, athletic director Eddie Nunez, who is leaving for the same position at the University of Houston in the Big 12 Conference. Nunez hired Mendenhall last winter, and his departure comes just a week before Mendenhall’s return.

Nunez’s decision to hire Mendenhall was influenced by a conversation he had with Virginia’s athletic director Carla Williams, where he learned about Mendenhall’s character and coaching abilities. Despite the challenges of the New Mexico football program, Mendenhall’s hire was seen as a positive step forward. The Lobos had their best season in years with four wins in 2021.

New Mexico will kick off the 2024 college football season with a game against Montana State next Saturday. The team has not yet announced how they plan to find Nunez’s replacement. Mendenhall’s return to coaching after two seasons away will come under new leadership, but with the experience and determination to lead the Lobos to success.
