Albuquerque City Councilors Joaquin Baca and Dan Lewis have proposed a bill aimed at easing restrictions on housing developments in order to address the city’s housing crisis. The legislation, set to be voted on Monday night, would fast-track new housing developments along busy main corridors.
While Baca and Lewis believe that increasing housing density in certain areas could help alleviate the shortage of affordable housing, some community members, including neighborhood association president Janice Arnold-Jones, have voiced concerns about the lack of transparency and public input in the process.
The bill has also faced criticism from the Inter-Coalition Council, who believe that it prioritizes the interests of developers over those of the public and could potentially violate the New Mexico Civil Rights Act. Despite these challenges, Baca, Lewis, and supporters of the bill remain optimistic about its potential to address Albuquerque’s housing crisis.
If the bill is passed by the city council, it still has the possibility of being vetoed by the mayor.
