President Joe Biden plans to deliver two major speeches before leaving office to outline key parts of his legacy from over 50 years in public service. The first speech will focus on foreign policy after his return from Italy, while the second will be a farewell address to the country. While the speeches have not been fully drafted, they are expected to reflect on his time in public office, including his four years in the White House.
Biden’s foreign policy speech will emphasize America’s strength through alliances, with a focus on NATO, Indo-Pacific relations, and support for Ukraine. The speech is unlikely to dwell on the controversial decision to withdraw from Afghanistan in 2021, although efforts to combat terrorist groups like ISIS will be mentioned. The administration is also considering additional measures to address homegrown radicalization and prevent domestic terrorist attacks.
In the final weeks of his term, Biden plans to meet with the families of victims of the recent New Orleans attack, visit California to highlight environmental initiatives, and travel to Rome and Vatican City for a final international visit. Before leaving office, Biden is expected to issue additional pardons, particularly focusing on sentencing disparities. While he has not decided on preemptively pardoning individuals targeted by the incoming Trump administration, he will only pardon those who are willing to receive clemency.
