Sam Lacey Inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2024

Former NM State men’s basketball star, Sam Lacey, has been selected for induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2024 class. Lacey, known as “Slammin’ Sam,” had a remarkable collegiate career at NM State from 1967 to 1970, leading the Aggies to a 27-3 record and the school’s first Final Four appearance in the 1969-70 season. Lacey set school records that still stand today, averaging 16.3 points and 14.2 rebounds per game.

After college, Lacey was drafted fifth overall in the 1970 NBA draft by the Cincinnati Royals and went on to have a successful 13-year career, earning NBA All-Star honors in 1975. Lacey’s impact on the league was so significant that his jersey was retired by the Kings (formerly the Royals) in 1983.

Lacey’s legacy was further solidified with inductions into the US Bank/NM State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1975, the Aggies Ring of Honor in 2008, and the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. His recent selection for the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame cements his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
