“Pickleball Enthusiasts in Las Cruces Excited About New East Mesa Courts” – Source: New Mexico

The City of Las Cruces has officially opened the East Mesa Sports Complex pickleball courts, becoming a part of the rapidly growing trend of pickleball in the U.S. Crystal Hyslop and Janice Czyscon, who have taken up the sport, find it easier to learn and less physically demanding compared to other sports like tennis. The new sports complex features eight pickleball courts along with other sports facilities like fields, basketball courts, and a skate park. The approval and funding for the project came from Las Cruces voters through general obligation bond measures and federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.
The pickleball courts opened to the public on September 13, with residents and city officials gathering for the ribbon cutting ceremony. The location of the complex in Las Cruces’ East Mesa provides a scenic view of the Organ Mountains and court lights for evening play. Pickleball’s popularity has been on the rise, with at least 13.6 million participants in the U.S. as of 2024. Las Cruces Mayor Eric Enriquez reminisced about the building of Maag Park in his childhood and sees the new pickleball courts as a continuation of providing recreational spaces for the community. Despite the exact amount of funding for the project remaining unclear, the completion of the East Mesa Sports Complex is a significant addition to Las Cruces’ sports and recreational offerings.
