What we have learned about the victims of the New Orleans truck attack

A tragic incident occurred in New Orleans when a 42-year-old U.S. citizen from Texas drove a pickup truck into crowds celebrating the new year on Bourbon Street, killing at least 15 people and injuring over 30. The suspect also opened fire on responding officers before being killed himself. The FBI found an Islamic State group flag in the truck and is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.

Among the victims were Martin “Tiger” Bech, a former wide receiver at Princeton University who was living in New York City and working as a junior bond trader, and Reggie Hunter, a manager at a warehouse in Baton Rouge. Bech was described as a ferocious competitor, a beloved teammate, and a caring friend by those who knew him. He was a member of the 2016 and 2018 Ivy League champion teams at Princeton.

Another victim was Ni’Kyra Cheyenne Dedeaux, a recent high school graduate who was remembered as a bright and beloved daughter and granddaughter. Her family members mourned her loss on social media. The community in Lafayette, Louisiana, where Bech also hailed from, mourned the loss of these individuals. The attack, regardless of motive, left devastated families and friends in its wake, with lasting consequences for those affected by the tragedy.
