Transgender player on San Jose State women’s volleyball team turns heads with powerful spike against New Mexico

The San Jose State Spartans women’s volleyball team secured a 3-1 victory against the New Mexico Lobos as they faced controversy surrounding having a transgender athlete, Blaire Fleming, on their roster. Fleming led the team with 18 kills in the match, while teammates Brooke Bryant, Eda Koker, Emma Testi, and Brooke Slusser also contributed to the win. One of Fleming’s kills during the game raised questions on social media as it appeared to hit the Lobos’ libero in the face or chest.

The inclusion of Fleming on the team has sparked controversy, leading to matches being forfeited and a lawsuit against the NCAA from one of her teammates. Mountain West Conference Commissioner Gloria Nevarez expressed her heartbreak over the negative attention the issue has received, emphasizing that both sides are young student-athletes.

Despite the controversy, San Jose State improved to 10-3 on the season and 5-3 against Mountain West opponents. The team’s performance on the court continues to be strong despite the distractions off the court.
