The impact of climate change: Deadly heat waves are escalating in New Mexico

New Mexico is facing a crisis of heat-related deaths and illnesses as temperatures soar across the state. In a recent legislative committee meeting, experts discussed the impacts of climate change on New Mexicans and what can be done to address these issues.

According to panelists, emergency department visits for heat stress in New Mexico have nearly doubled since 2010, with a majority of patients being between 18 and 44 years old. The number of people seeking care for heat-related illness has steadily increased over the years, with over 600 visits so far this year alone.

Lauren Reichelt, the director of the Environmental Health Division at the New Mexico Environment Department, highlighted the various health risks associated with heat exposure, including kidney, heart, and respiratory problems. To combat these risks, she recommended providing workers with frequent breaks, cool rooms, water, and electrolytes.

Nathaniel Matthews-Trigg, a founding board member of Healthy Climate New Mexico, emphasized the need for collective community efforts to address the barriers that leave vulnerable populations at risk. He stressed the importance of targeted strategies to help socially isolated individuals, people with chronic medical conditions, senior citizens, children, pregnant people, and those without access to cooling in their workplaces.

State climatologist David DuBois warned that New Mexico is becoming hotter and more arid due to climate change, with temperatures expected to increase by an average of 5 degrees Fahrenheit by 2050. It is clear that urgent action is needed to protect New Mexicans from the deadly impacts of rising temperatures.
