Jeremi Sensky survived a fatal terror attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on New Year’s Day when a man inspired by ISIS rammed a truck into a crowd of revelers. Sensky, who uses a wheelchair, was struck by the truck and ended up with two broken legs. The attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, had originally planned to harm his family and friends but decided to carry out a larger attack in the name of the “war between believers and disbelievers.” Sensky was one of the many injured in the attack, which killed 14 people and left dozens wounded.
Sensky recalled the chaos and horror of the attack, with the sound of gunfire and people screaming. Despite his wheelchair being smashed and being unable to find his phone, he eventually received assistance from a police officer who told him he was lucky to be alive. Sensky underwent surgery for his injuries, including a broken right leg that he believes ultimately saved his life.
Reflecting on the attack, Sensky expressed disbelief and love for everyone, unable to comprehend why someone would carry out such a violent act. The experience has been surreal for him, and he tearfully recounted the events leading up to his injuries. Sensky’s story is a testament to the resilience and courage of survivors in the face of senseless violence.
