Cases of norovirus are on the rise in New Mexico and across the U.S., according to data from the CDC. The stomach bug causes symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea and is spreading more as holiday gatherings increase. Dr. Chad Smelser of the NMDOH warns that the virus may reach pre-pandemic levels of spread this year. The best way to protect yourself is through diligent handwashing and avoiding contact with sick individuals. Symptoms usually appear 24 to 48 hours after exposure, and if they last longer than three days, medical attention should be sought. The CDC reported 91 outbreaks of norovirus the week of December 5, up from 69 the week before. NMDOH has identified four outbreaks in long-term care facilities within the state. Smelser emphasizes the importance of isolating oneself if experiencing symptoms consistent with norovirus and avoiding preparing food for others. For the latest news and updates, visit KRQE News 13.
