Identity of woman who died after being set on fire in NYC subway is confirmed as Debrina Kawam, a 61-year-old from New Jersey

Debrina Kawam, a 57-year-old woman from Toms River, New Jersey, was identified as the victim who was fatally set on fire in a New York City subway earlier this month. She was asleep on a train at Stillwell Avenue station when a man set her on fire and fled. Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a 33-year-old Guatemalan citizen, was arrested in connection with Kawam’s murder after being caught on police body camera footage. He was indicted on four counts of murder and one count of arson, with the possibility of life without parole. Zapeta-Calil appeared in court and was remanded back into custody. He is in the U.S. unlawfully and was previously deported. A vigil was held for Kawam, and a grand jury indictment included charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and arson. The Brooklyn District Attorney’s office is handling the case. Police did not share much information about the victim, and initial reports incorrectly stated her age as 61. The community has been shocked and saddened by the horrific incident, and authorities are working to bring justice for Kawam and her loved ones.
