Connections between Jimmy Carter and New Mexico

Former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100, had a long history with the state of New Mexico. Carter made several trips to the state both before and after his presidency. In 1975 and 1976, he visited Albuquerque as part of his presidential campaign, and in 1979, as president, he flew to Kirtland Air Force Base and stayed in the presidential suite at the Sheraton Old Town Inn. Despite his efforts, Carter did not win the popular vote in New Mexico during either of his presidential elections, losing to Gerald Ford in 1976 and Ronald Reagan in 1980. Even after leaving the presidency, Carter continued to visit the state, enjoying a ski vacation at Taos Ski Valley in 1986. Carter’s connections to New Mexico were significant, and his presence in the state left a lasting impact on its residents.
