Skiers and snowboarders are taking advantage of the man-made snow at Sandia Peak Ski Area and other locations across the state to enjoy the slopes during an unusually warm December. Despite the lack of natural snow, the ski areas are benefiting from snow machines to keep runs open and accommodate visitors.
Carlos Morales and his family were seen hitting the slopes, enjoying the sunny weather and the man-made snow. The Sandia Peak Ski Area is now open seven days a week, providing a great opportunity for skiers and snowboarders to practice without the crowds.
While visitor numbers have been slightly slower since Thanksgiving, Ski New Mexico Executive Director Christy Germscheid is expecting an increase over the holidays. The early snow in November allowed for the setup of snow machines, ensuring that almost all runs are open for visitors.
Although everyone is hoping for more natural snowfall, crews are prepared to continue making snow as needed. Skiers and snowboarders are unfazed by the source of the snow, enjoying the slopes regardless. The ski industry in New Mexico remains optimistic for the rest of the season, with a hope for more snowfall from Mother Nature.
