New Mexico State University is currently investigating derogatory tweets posted by offensive coordinator Tyler Wright on his X account (formerly Twitter) between 2011 and 2014. The tweets contain offensive language targeting women, LGBTQ+ individuals, Blacks, Hispanics, and others, including racial slurs. Wright was absent from the Aggies’ recent game against New Mexico and will not be with the team during the investigation.
Wright’s inappropriate online behavior ceased in 2015 when he started working as a wide receivers coach at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. New Mexico State coach Tony Sanchez expressed surprise at the timing of the information coming to light and stated that the team will comment further once they have had a chance to review the situation.
Wright joined NMSU as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach in December 2021 under former coach Jerry Kill. He was later promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach as part of the new coaching staff led by Sanchez.
The university is taking the matter seriously and ensuring that appropriate action is taken based on the investigation’s findings. Wright’s future with the team will depend on the outcome of the university’s probe into his past social media activity.
