Two hikers were rescued from Wheeler Peak on Friday night after getting lost in the dark. The hikers, who were not identified, had been hiking in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area when they lost their way as the sun began to set. The Taos County Sheriff’s Office received a call for help and initiated a search and rescue operation.
Despite the challenging terrain and darkness, the rescue team was able to locate the hikers and safely bring them back to basecamp. The hikers were reported to be tired and cold but otherwise unharmed. The successful rescue was a result of the coordinated efforts of the Taos County Sheriff’s Office, search and rescue teams, and other emergency responders.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared while hiking in the wilderness, especially as daylight hours grow shorter in the fall and winter months. Hikers are advised to bring proper gear, stay on designated trails, and inform others of their plans before heading out. Thanks to the quick response of the rescue teams, these hikers were able to return home safely.
