Northeastern Region Experiences Wintry Weather on First Day of the Season

People in the Northeast woke up to snow on the first day of winter, with snowfall totals ranging from a dusting to six inches. The highest total was 9.4 inches in Milton, Massachusetts. A strong cold front caused snow showers to move off shore, with temperatures staying 10-20 degrees below average. More snow is possible in parts of the mid-Appalachians and Great Lakes, along with breezy winds up to 35 mph. Freeze alerts are in effect for northeast Florida and southeast Georgia, while Cold Weather Advisories are in place in parts of New York, western Massachusetts, and northeast Pennsylvania.

In the northwest, heavy rain and mountain snow are falling from northern California to Washington state, with alerts in place for parts of California, Oregon, and Wyoming. Temperatures in the western half of the country are soaring 10-25 degrees above average on Saturday, with records possible in Phoenix, Tucson, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas. By Sunday, warmer air will spread over the Plains, with highs up to 30 degrees warmer than average. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be warm throughout the country, with temperatures at or above average.

While a white Christmas is not expected in many areas due to the warm weather, a snowy holiday is still possible in some regions. A wintry Christmas Eve is even more likely.
