Good Samaritan finds special needs child who left school unattended

Local mother, Desire Perea, is raising concerns after her 9-year-old non-verbal son with autism ran away from Bosque Farms Elementary School and crossed a busy highway. Mason Parea managed to travel over a mile off campus, sparking fear in his mother as she worried about worst-case scenarios. Mason left the school around 11:50 a.m. on December 2nd, running out of a gate that was left unlocked and crossing Highway 47, almost getting hit by multiple cars. Fortunately, 18-year-old Irvin Varela, a nearby construction worker, noticed Mason and was able to catch up to him after a brief chase. The incident left Perea shaken, emphasizing the importance of proper school security and supervision for children with special needs. Bosque Farms Elementary, part of Los Lunas Public Schools, claimed to take the safety of their students seriously and stated that they continually review safety practices. Perea hopes that this incident serves as a wake-up call for parents and schools to be more vigilant in ensuring the safety of all students.
