University of New Mexico President Garnett S. Stokes has announced the appointment of Fernando Lovo as the university’s next Vice President and Director of Athletics. Lovo, who joins from the University of Texas at Austin, where he serves as an Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Operations, will begin his new role on December 1, 2024.
Stokes expressed excitement about Lovo’s appointment, citing his extensive experience in collegiate athletics administration and dynamic leadership style. Lovo’s track record of success, dedication to student-athlete well-being, and commitment to academic integrity align with the values of UNM. Lovo, in turn, expressed his honor and humility in being selected to lead UNM Athletics, highlighting his excitement to work with the student-athletes, coaches, and community to achieve new levels of success.
Lovo’s appointment is seen as crucial for UNM Athletics as the department aims to enhance program competitiveness, navigate conference dynamics, and manage emerging financial commitments. The search committee, led by Del Archuleta, praised Lovo’s qualifications, authenticity, innovative approach, and commitment to student-athlete success as standing out among a highly competitive field of candidates. Lovo’s appointment also received praise from prominent figures in collegiate athletics, including head football coach Bronco Mendenhall and head men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino.
Lovo, a rising star in the industry, holds a Bachelor’s degree in political science and government and a Master of Science in Sport and Fitness Administration/Management from the University of Florida. He and his wife, Jordan, have two children. UNM Athletics will host a press conference to formally introduce Lovo at a later date.
