President-elect Donald Trump’s meeting with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., at the Army-Navy football game has reportedly led to a change in Trump’s attitude towards Brown. Trump had previously expressed intentions to fire military leaders focused on diversity initiatives, including Brown. However, after their meeting at the game, Trump is now more likely to keep Brown in his role, as they got along well and Brown expressed eagerness to work with the new administration. This decision comes amidst concerns from Republican lawmakers and retired generals about the destabilizing effects of firing Brown, especially as there are controversies surrounding Trump’s pick for the Defense Department, Pete Hegseth. Hegseth has been critical of Brown in the past, calling for his removal. Brown, the first Black American service chief in the U.S. military, has been praised for his stability and leadership, despite facing criticism for diversity initiatives during his confirmation hearing. Despite these challenges, Brown’s qualities as a leader have earned him the support of various individuals, including retired Air Force Gen. Terrence “TJ” O’Shaughnessy. Brown has been open about the biases he has faced as an African American in the military and his commitment to addressing issues of racism and discrimination within the armed forces.
