Pentagon reveals that the U.S. troop presence in Syria has doubled

The Defense Department revealed that the number of U.S. troops in Syria has doubled to 2,000, which is higher than the previously reported 900 troops. This increase in troops predates the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and is not in response to recent events in Syria. The additional troops are there to support the mission to defeat ISIS and prevent it from regrouping. The troops are predominantly Army soldiers and have been in the country for a while, with some on longer-term deployments and others on temporary rotations. The true number of American forces in Syria may have been intentionally covered up, according to a defense official. The Pentagon only disclosed the correct number now because they had just learned of it themselves and felt compelled to provide accurate information due to the significant interest in Syria.
