DOJ issues recommendations for addressing hazing in New Mexico schools following recent scandals

New Mexico Department of Justice Issues Recommendations to Address Hazing Scandals

Hazing scandals at high schools and colleges in New Mexico have resulted in canceled seasons, coach firings, and criminal charges. Despite these incidents, New Mexico remains one of only six states in the U.S. without an anti-hazing law. Recently, the New Mexico Department of Justice released a report with 35 recommendations aimed at preventing hazing and addressing its toxic culture.

The report follows allegations of physical and sexual misconduct within New Mexico State University’s men’s basketball program, leading to the cancellation of the 2022-2023 season. Three players were charged with criminal offenses, including criminal sexual penetration and false imprisonment. A special investigation revealed disturbing details about the team’s culture and recruitment practices.

The DOJ’s recommendations include creating new anti-hazing legislation, allocating resources for prevention and training, and establishing reporting mechanisms. Despite failed legislative efforts in the past, the DOJ is working with lawmakers to draft a new bill based on its recommendations for the upcoming legislative session.

Hazing allegations have not been limited to universities, with Santa Fe High School’s football program also facing accusations. The DOJ emphasizes the importance of all institutions taking hazing seriously to prevent further incidents.

As the DOJ prepares to release specifics of the proposed anti-hazing bill, schools and institutions across the state are encouraged to adopt proactive measures outlined in the report. By addressing hazing at all levels, New Mexico aims to create a safer and more respectful environment for all students.
