In an impressive display of dominance, the Colorado School of Mines football team bounced back from a setback the previous week to beat New Mexico Highlands 56-21. The 18th-ranked Orediggers ran for a total of 491 yards, with Legacy High grad Braelon Tate leading the charge with 210 yards and two touchdowns. The team amassed 658 total yards of offense and scored touchdowns on seven of their first nine offensive drives. Aksel Richard even had a 90-yard kick return for the program’s first return touchdown in 14 years.
Denver South High grad Joseph Capra made his first career start at quarterback and had a solid performance, completing 12 of 20 passes for 126 yards and running for 80 yards on seven carries. The win kept the Orediggers’ hopes alive of extending their RMAC title streak to six, but they will need to win against 10th-ranked CSU Pueblo in the upcoming game.
CSU Pueblo, who also won their game on Saturday, can clinch a share of the RMAC title with a win over Mines. The Orediggers will need to win their remaining games and get help from other teams in the last two weekends of the season. Overall, the team’s strong performance against New Mexico Highlands has reignited their tournament hopes and set the stage for an exciting matchup against CSU Pueblo.
